I enjoyed this wonderful and imaginativ...Hi Micki,
I enjoyed this wonderful and imaginative explanation of Halloween and without wishing to insult you or your information sources I did notice a somewhat Christian interpretation to some of your points.
While you are correct that Halloween is a corruption of ‘All Hallows Eve’ and is most definitely a Christian invention however it does not mean All Saints Day which in actual fact the day after on November 1st. Pagans do not have Saints.
Also Samhain is not a Druid God but a Gaelic Festival marking the end of the Celtic year and a celebration of the end of the harvest season and it is quite wrong for anyone to suggest that ‘The devil, himself, was evoked for such purposes.’ Like the one God notion the Devil is a Christian invention and has nothing to do with Pagan festivals.
What our ancestors were afraid of at that time of year was the comingling of the Spiritual and Real worlds on that night allowing both Good and Evil spirits to visit this world.
Hence the Evil Spirits had to be TRICKED away from the dwellings and village with TREATS.
Just like the Devil, Witch’s and Witchcraft are I’m afraid to say also Christian inventions and stem from the ignorance and ego of the early church leaders. You see if you invent an ‘All Seeing God’ who sees all and knows all then you would expect your priest to know the answers to everything. These early priests or wandering evangelists were probably no better informed than your average peasant when it came to such things as the art of healing and so condemned it as magic performed by women obviously in league with the devil.
Back then it was quite common for the early Christian church to condemn all it did not understand bringing two words ‘Blasphemy’ and ‘Heresy’ into our language that were to be used to condemn Pagan rituals.
The rest, as they say is history.
Merlin
Merlinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05956434277375223676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2937578189437367147.post-30543957082440758122013-10-14T12:10:47.984-07:002013-10-14T12:10:47.984-07:00Very atmospheric piece of writing, I enjoyed it. ...Very atmospheric piece of writing, I enjoyed it.
